Mr. SOLOMON Habtu from Ethiopia (2001 Group Training)

JICA training Program: My gate way to Tottery University, Japan

First of all let me introduce my self that my name is SOLOMON Habtu from Ethiopia. I was one of the participants of JICA group training 2001 entitled as "Irrigation Water Resources in arid and semiarid regions and E.I.A for Sustainable Development" held from July 16, 2001 to November 23, 2001 in Tottori University, Tottori, Japan.

Many irrigation related topics were covered in the form of lectures and field visits during the aforementioned period of time by Professors and Doctors from Tottori and other Universities. The lesson I gained in that time indeed adds up to my knowledge and makes me more motivated to apply my specialization in my country. Various places were visited pertinent to Irrigation. Some of them are Aichi-Nagoya, Okinawa, Okayama, Hiroshima, Tottori and nearby areas. The field visits enabled me not only to understand Japanese irrigated agriculture but also to familiarize with the Japanese environs.

Apart from attending the training for about 4 months, I was also interested to continue my further study in the same place after wards. Then I shared my interest to Professor HATTORI Kunio, the training leader, and some international students. They advised me to fix draft research idea and talk to pertinent Professor. I came up with research idea that can be supervised by Professor KITAMURA Yoshinobu. Then I shared the idea to him and he was interested on it and encouraged me to go through all necessary processes after returning back home. Accordingly I developed my research proposal and fulfill all necessary documents through my supervisor. Finally Professor KITAMURA congratulated me that I was accepted by Monbusho as of October 2002 for my Ph.D training. I was happy and here I am now perusing my study for 3 years as of then.

I therefore acknowledge Professor KITAMURA Yoshinobu, my supervisor and Professor HATTORI Kunio, Dr. OGATA Hidehiko, Ms. HATTORI Junko, Ms. SATO Hiromi from JICA training coordination group as well as the international students in Tottori University who contributed to my success.

Last but not least I would like to forward my encouragement to JICA group trainees who want to continue their M.Sc. or Ph.D. training in Tottori or other Universities in Japan. Just have a research idea and make sure that you have adequate data and workable. Then go a head to share it to pertinent Professor or Doctor. Fulfill all necessary requirements as per time. Then it will hopefully lead you to your aspiration.

Wish you success.Sincerely,

SOLOMON Habtu, from Ethiopia

Mr. Cherif Ould Ahamed from Mauritania (1999 Group Training)
I em quite grateful to the Japanese international cooperation agency (JICA) for having afforded me the opportunity to come to Japan to study in an environment of high technology and availability of training course in water resources development and environment impact assessment in arid areas on 1999.

The training groups was highly organized and given by experienced professors in lectures and research works in arid and semi arid region all over the world helped us see international conditions very well, specially lectured in water supply facilities and water storage which I interested during this training course given by professor Kunio Hattori and Dr Ogata.

After completing the training course, I contacted my Professor Kunio Hattori who was the course leader and lectured on the water supply facilities and water storage, I discussed with him to come back again to Japan for study in master course at the graduate school of Tottori university, with his supervisor, he promised to recommend me to the MONBUSHO, after coming back home I always contacted my professoriSensaijby Internet and I prepared all document for My Sensai

1.       My Boss recommendation
2.       University undergraduate recommendations
3.       Copies for statement of Marks and Diplomas
4.       Application form

On this years October I was very lucky, Ifm accepted by MONBUSHO to come to Japan to study for special program this years for foreign student in Master course at Tottori University.
My special thanks to my professor Kunio Hattori for the fulfillment of this supporting me, he has also inspired many participant to come in Japan and studies PHD, and he contributed a lot of in my happy and good sty in Japan, specially in Tottori. He has been cooperative; helpful in various aspects I shall always remember him.

Mr. Khaled Hassan from Egypt (1998 Group Training)

Dear Brothers and Sisters around the entire world:

Ifm Khaled Hassan and my nationality is Egyptian, now I study doctoral course in Japan-Tottori University.
This announcement has some information about my experience related to JICA program as I got chance to came to Japan through JICA and continues for study PhD course.

First of all, before I came to Japan for training course I was thinking itfs difficult to contact with Japanese because of the language and culture but when I just arrived to Japan airport, very kind coordinator was waiting me and I felt, as home every thing is easy and comfortable after that we went to Hiroshima International centre (CIC) and I stayed for three weeks. In this place so many lecture we got to teach us many thing about Japanese language and culture.

After three weeks the training course start in Tottori city at Tottori University. This course was very useful to us; we had getting many lectures in different fields as theoretical training and other many study tours within this period as practical training. Of course through this work some amusing activity cooperating with the professors and JICA staff and we had participated with many events such as festivals and entertainments. From last activity I could Easily contact with one of the professor who I interested in his field as my majority. For example I contact with professor Hattori (head leader of this training course), his field is material of concrete which my master did in Egypt in concrete, so I told him I want to get doctoral course from Japan as advanced country in many fields and he in easy way accepted me as foreign student in his lab. After that he recommended me and sent the application form to the ministry of education in Japan (MONBOSHO) as he accepted me in his laboratory. Then I got this scholarship to study in Japan in material of concrete. Really this is good chance to me and every one wants to study abroad in advanced and safety country. By the way, study in Japan very nice because we working as team in the laboratory even assistant professor help also in every thing and many advices I can get from my professor and assistant professor for my research.

So letfs try to come to Japan as JICA participants and for training, enjoying and all participant can get chance to study abroad (donft hesitate and go a head). Nowadays, I live in Japan with my family in peace and I have much experience for my study and my life every nice thing is easy to get and to do any time anywhere and I visit many interesting places in Japan. Finally I hope every one can come and enjoy in Japan.

Best regards and good luck

Khaled Hassan, from Eygpt

Ms. Panganayi Cleopatra from Zimbabwe (2004 Group Training)

My name is Cleopatra Panganayi and I come from Zimbabwe. In 2004, while I was working for the Ministry of Water Resources and Infrastructure Development as a chief water engineer, I was selected to participate in the JICA group training course in Irrigation Water Resources in Arid and Semi- Arid region and EIA for Sustainable Development at Tottori University. Through this course, I got a chance to learn and experience the latest design concepts and technologies in the water engineering field. As a civil engineer, I was most interested in the design concepts of water infrastructure. The most memorable visit for me was the underground dam construction in Okinawa. Before the JICA course, I had never seen an underground dam. The design concept and construction technology was very impressive to me. Moreover, the concept was very relevant to dam construction in my country whose climate is very similar to that of Okinawa. Not only did, the JICA course expose me to the latest design concepts in the civil engineering field, it also inspired me to further my studies in Japan. I have since joined Tottori University graduate school and have had a chance to research further some concepts I acquired from the JICA course. I have benefitted a lot from the guidance of Prof. Hattori and Dr. Ogata. I owe it to the JICA course for exposing me to new and relevant design concepts which are useful to the engineering field. I hope to continue to contribute to the development of safer and more sustainable infrastructure in the world.
