Introduction

Forest Ecology and Ecosystem Management Laboratory is a new lab established in May 1999 at the Faculty of Agriculture, Tottori University, Japan. There are currently fourteen members; a professor,  three graduate students and seven undergraduate students with two foreign students from China.

We mainly study the dynamics of natural forests, especially old-growth deciduous broad-leaved forests, in cool-temperate regions in Japan. We also research the regeneration patterns and maintenance processes of secondary forests, which are strongly affected by human disturbances, using dendroecological methods for the basis of the conservation and management of forest ecosystems.

The Forest Ecology and Ecosystem Management Laboratory of Tottori University would like to welcome new undergraduate and/or graduate students who should be energetic and field hardy in forest research.

Main themes of our laboratory

Stand structure and regeneration patterns in old-growth forests
Ecological traits of tree species in deciduous broad-leaved forests
Effects of human disturbances on the establishment of secondary forests
Changes in forest environment and species diversity along forest development

Main sites for our studies

Deciduous broad-leaved forests in the Tottori University Forests
Old- and second- growth forests in the Mt. Daisen National Park area
Cool-temperate regions in the northern Hemisphere
Secondary forests in and adjacent to Tottori City
Natural forests in Hokkaido, northern Japan
